Update on El Dorado Elementary School
July 30 Closure & Next Steps

On July 30, the gates of El Dorado Elementary School were locked for the foreseeable future. It was a difficult and emotional day for many in our community who have cared for, volunteered at, and loved this campus — including the four‑legged friends who visited regularly. With the Sacramento City Unified School District accepting the 7‑11 Committee’s report, the process now moves into its next phase, which involves several administrative steps.

While that unfolds, there are three important action items for our community:

1. State Historic Preservation Commission Hearing – August 7

El Dorado Elementary’s nomination will be heard by the California State Historical Resources Commission on August 7. Email the commissioner in support of preserving the school here.

2. Sacramento City Council Review

The Sacramento City Council will vote on the City Historic Preservation Commission’s recommendation to designate El Dorado Elementary as a protected historic resource. More information on how to participate in this meeting will be provided as soon as the agenda is released.

3. Volunteer Support Needed for the School Gardens

The East Sacramento Preservation Association, in partnership with Sacramento City Unified School District, is forming a volunteer committee to help maintain the Rain Garden and Gilmore Garden during the two‑year transition period. Approval from the School Board is anticipated following their July 23 meeting.

What We Are Preserving

Our goal is to keep these gardens healthy and thriving until the site’s future is determined.
